I took up karate in the 1970s, when I was pursuing a master's degree in Clinical Psychology. Our instructor always ensured that our fingers were kept together so that our hands would form spades. Quite interesting that in Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do his fingers are always splayed like dragon's claws.
